Our first steps into entrepreneurship began long before What’s New Local — they began with a children’s book inspired by a rescue cat.
That rescue cat happened to wear a yellow hat, and that rescue cat wanted to give back. It was then that the original #YellowHatsforCats campaign was born.
The real Oliver Poons and over 11,000 of his online cat friends from around the world donned yellow hats to promote the Oliver Poons Children’s Company’s give-back campaign to animal rescue. A portion of the company’s children’s book sales were donated to animal welfare groups around the world.
It was the same series of self-published children’s books that inspired the idea for What’s New Local. We saw the need for an online platform to harness the power of local community and small business amidst our own journey as new business owners.
With the launch of What’s New Local, we wanted to find a way to continue our commitment to animal rescue:
For each new What’s New Local paid membership, we’ll give away a free What’s New Local account to an animal rescue group to use to promote their adoptable pets.
Additionally, our new social media campaign #YellowHatsforLocalDogsandCats gives pet owners a unique opportunity to contribute to the cause:
For every photo of a dog or cat in a yellow hat posted to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook with #YellowHatsforLocalDogsandCats, we’ll also give away a FREE What’s New Local membership to a nominated animal rescue group. To participate:

2. Follow @whatsnewlocal
3. Tag your favorite local animal rescue group to nominate them for a free @whatsnewlocal account
4. Challenge your friends to do the same!
