As we learn more…

As we learn more about Bones, his story has been revealing itself to us and it makes us sick. His "owners" dumped him in the desert, unable to walk, unable to seek shelter, unable to find food, in excruciating pain. They left him there to starve and succumb to the elements. When we found him, he was already at the beginning stages of emaciation. Bones has a disease called hypertrophic osteodystrophy. It causes severe pain and when we found him, he was basically unable to walk. There's no way he got to the desert by himself. He appears to be a pure bred Dane. We believe someone intentionally bred him to sell. He began limping and eventually, they made the decision to toss him out until the desert, unable to sell him and unwilling to let customers learn about the existence of this genetic disease that's now running through the veins of the babies they bought. This is what you do when you give money to breeders. You support this inhumane treatment of animals. The more puppies they sell, the more incentive they have to keep doing this. And it doesn't matter if you go to see the parents before making a decision to purchase because they will never let you see the puppies that didn't quite come out right and were discarded. They'll keep these genetic issues hidden. In the meantime, we're basically looking at a hospice case. It would be cruel to continue to make him suffer like this. BUT, you know us. We're always hoping for a miracle and maybe something will come through that will enable us to get him out of pain and to a sustainable point. We're going to give it a few days before we make decisions. He's on medication for the moment that slows the progression of the disease and helps with his pain, it's enough to get him back on his feet. But there are some medications that could do a better job with this pain than what he has now. The only problem is that they are expensive. We have been told they cost about $8/pill and we can't quite swing that at the moment. Perhaps if there are enough people willing to donate a pill for him, we could switch him over to that at least for now, while we wait and hope for a miracle. ūüė≠
