If we had the…

If we had the means to measure today's heartbreak, we wouldn't be able to, it would be right off the scale. If we had words to describe our sorrow, there still wouldn't be enough. Today was a low point in MuttLove history. Today we felt like crawling into a hole and not coming back out. We lost three puppies today unexpectedly, before most people had even had lunch. As one foster was getting started with her day, Willie suddenly died. One moment he was alive and active, the next minute he was not. He had been a little fussy the night before, but we never saw that coming. Nugget was immediately rushed to the vet where they discovered that he was also crashing. He was put on oxygen and then later died in surgery in a desperate bid to save his life. We have no idea what ultimately got them. We don't know if they caught an infection or if it was something congenital. There are eight other puppies from Azalea's litter. Will the same happen to them? As another foster was starting her day, she discovered Chewy was pouring copious amounts of blood from his anus. He was rushed to the vet as well where both fosters were able to hug and cry and support each other while awaiting news. Chewy had just made it through parvo a couple of weeks before. We thought everything would be smooth sailing. Little did we know that he had an intussusception lurking. When dogs have parvo, their intestines basically go bonkers, spitting out explosive diarrhea. Sometimes, the spasms become so violent, the intestines start to telescope into each other and with each spasm, more intestine is swallowed into itself. He too passed during an emergency surgery when it was discovered that 80-90% of his intestines were already dead. It's absolutely soul-crushing to lose that many babies in a matter of hours like that. To see such young puppies have their little lives simply snuffed out. Despite all of our efforts, it just wasn't enough. We couldn't save them. And that hurts. (Continued in comments...)
